10 Apr Geometric Cells Pattern: Step by Step Tutorial

Today I'll show you how to draw this geometric cells pattern with a step by step tutorial. The instructions are easy to follow for beginners and you'll only need dotted or graph paper and a few markers. Hope you enjoy drawing this biology inspired pattern, let's get into it!

Tutorial Supplies.

Dotted paper ( Tsuki or Leuchtturm1917).
Pencil (Bruynzeel or these MUJI style ones ).
Black fineliners ( Sakura Pigma Micron ).
Color markers (Sakura Pigma Brush or Fabricolor ).

Step 1: Sketch a rectangular grid.

Use any kind of pencil to draw a rectangular grid that'll help you a lot in the next steps to keep the composition in place. Each rectangle should be 5 dots wide x 6 dots tall. You'll erase these auxiliary lines later.

Step 2: Draw tiny diamonds.

Grab a black fineliner (I used a Sakura Pigma Micron 01) and draw tiny diamond shapes around the grid's intersections. But only around every other one, so make sure you leave a free intersection between one diamond and the next one.

Step 3: Draw hexagons.

Draw these big hexagons around the remaining intersections with the same fineliner you used in the previous step. Use the dots as a reference.

Step 4: Make the outlines thicker.

Grab a thicker nib (I used Sakura Pigma Micron 05) and go over all the shapes you've drawn so far. This will add so much contrast to the pattern and make the shapes pop.

Now you can erase the pencil grid you sketched at the beginning.

Step 5: Draw cell-like shapes.

Use the same nib to decorate all the geometric shapes. Draw dots inside the diamonds, and organic shapes inside the hexagons. Make them all a little different so they look kinda like trapped cells. You can also use any other shape for these decorations.

Step 6: Decorate the hexagons.

Grab the smaller tip fineliner (I used a Sakura Pigma Micron 01) and fill in the space between the organic shapes and the hexagons using radial lines. They don't have to be perfectly straight, you can play around and make them a bit wavy.

Step 7: Add color cells.

Grab your color markers! Draw some blobs inside the cells. They shouldn't perfectly match that cell shape, so make sure you leave some space here and there.

I used 2 different colors (Sakura Pigma Brush orange and purple) but you can go as minimal or colorful as you want.

Step 8: Connect the shapes.

Grab the thicker fineliner (in my case, Micron 05) and connect the diamonds and hexagons using vertical lines so they are grouped in columns.
